Youth regularly receive pro-marijuana tweets

Hundreds of thousands of American youth follow marijuana-related Twitter accounts and get pro-pot messages several times daily, according to School of Medicine researchers. They say the tweets are concerning because young people are thought to be especially responsive to social media and because drug use patterns tend to be established in the late teens and early 20s.

Same factors drive poor physical, financial health choices

Poor physical and financial health are driven by the same underlying psychological factors, a new study from Olin Business School finds. Researchers found that deciding to contribute to a retirement plan predicted whether people would try to get healthier.

Toker appointed managing director of Skandalaris

Emre Toker has been appointed managing director of the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Toker has been an entrepreneurship senior mentor-in-residence at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management. His appointment is effective Aug. 15, said Provost H. Holden Thorp, PhD.​

Fighting parasitic infection inadvertently unleashes dormant virus

Signals from the body’s immune system that help repel a common parasite inadvertently can cause a dormant viral infection to become active again, a new study from the School of Medicine shows. Pictured is a helminth parasite.

Harnessing the sun’s power

This spring and summer, WUSTL is adding 379 kilowatts of solar energy throughout all campuses, a move that will increase its solar output by more than 1,150 percent over previous levels. (Pictured) Tyson Research Center now has a 50-kW ground-mounted array.

STEM Faculty Institute on Teaching a good FIT

WUSTL’s Teaching Center brought together faculty from Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering & Applied Science for the inaugural Summer STEM Faculty Institute on Teaching last month. Faculty developed strategies to improve student learning and encourage undergraduates to persist in STEM majors.
